“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” - Viktor Frankl

Hi there, my name is Laura and I am a therapist here at Counselling & Co. My goal is to create a space where you can show up as your authentic self and be met with unconditional support.

As a cancer survivor and someone who has experienced chronic health challenges, I understand the uncertainty and overwhelm that can accompany health concerns. Navigating a complex health diagnosis can leave you feeling vulnerable and isolated. From the burden of constant specialist appointments, googling to find answers in a sea of differing opinions, and feeling as though medical professionals just do not get the reality of your experience, illness can quickly become all consuming. I support clients in processing the complex emotions that arise when experiencing their own illness, or supporting a loved one as a caregiver. Perhaps you are dealing with the hidden pain of putting on a smile at yet ANOTHER baby shower as you struggle to start a family of your own. Or maybe you are carrying the weight of supporting a sick loved one, and feeling guilt for needing any time for yourself. Maybe the anxiety surrounding visiting doctors and not getting answers for your symptoms has simply become too much. Mental and physical health are so intricately connected, and you deserve a space to process these complex emotions with care.

In my practice, I am privileged to support amazing individuals in high-stress, high-trauma careers. As someone who grew up in a first responder family, I have first-hand knowledge of the unique challenges faced by those on the front lines. From the toll that shift work takes on your wellbeing, to feeling the need to put on a brave face with family and friends after a particularly debilitating shift, you may have felt the need to “shut off” your emotions in order to cope and continue to serve in your role. Helping professions are known for drawing in selfless people, and the burnout can become very real when you do not receive that same care for yourself. In my work as a teacher I have experienced this firsthand, and know that creating space for yourself is crucial in order to continue supporting others. If you are ready to chat with someone who truly gets it, and reconnect with your sense of self beyond your job, I would be so happy to meet.

My clinical work with youth and families is informed by my background in education. As an Ontario Certified Teacher, I have experience working with learners of all ages, and currently still work in the education system in a mental health capacity. Areas of special focus for my work include ADHD, learning challenges, selective mutism, and school refusal. I work with youth and their parents to set goals, learn strategies, and collaboratively plan for success in school and beyond. My approach is neuroaffirming and strengths-based, so we can build upon what is already going well and create real, lasting change in ways that work for your learning style.

Reaching out for help is a brave step. Your future self will be so appreciative of the work you are doing now. If you feel ready to move forward with getting the support you deserve, I look forward to hearing your story.
